Foreign and domestic experts on deep geological repositories gather in Prague

Over three days, experts on deep geological repositories from several countries worldwide will address topics related to deep geological repositories and their preparation. They will participate in the Exchange Forum conference in Prague. The Czech Republic is currently the chair of the Implementing Geological Disposal of Radioactive Waste Technology Platform (IGD-TP) and as such is hosting this important event this year.

Experts will address a wide range of related issues at the conference, including priorities for selecting sites for the construction of deep geological repositories in different countries, focusing particularly on the selection process, safety issues, the treatment of  radioactive waste from small modular reactors, etc.

“This year marks the first time that the Czech Republic has chaired the international Implementing Geological Disposal of Radioactive Waste Technology Platform (IGD-TP). From the beginning, we have considered our chairing of the Platform to be a great honour, but also a responsibility and a challenge. Our objective is, primarily, to strengthen international cooperation and the sharing of experience in the field of the preparation of deep geological repositories, and the Exchange forum presents a unique opportunity to meet with our international colleagues and to address topics related to this important topic. Although the platform brings together a range of countries with different experiences and conditions, we have one mission in common – the safe disposal of radioactive waste by taking a responsible approach to our futures,” stated Markéta Dohnálková, Chairperson of IGD-TP and Head of the Repository Preparation Section at SÚRAO. The event is being held under the auspices of the Czech Ministry of Industry and Trade and a representative of the Ministry will make a keynote speech.

A total of 120 experts from various foreign organisations responsible for issues surrounding the disposal of radioactive waste, including institutions from Switzerland, Great Britain, Hungary, Germany and Taiwan, are attending the conference. The event will also include the presence of a representative of the International Atomic Energy Agency. In addition to the presentations, delegates will participate in excursions to the Bukov Underground Research Facility and the Richard radioactive waste disposal facility.
